Genre classification by reviewer : Animal Fiction
Bottomline : The life story of a stray tiger
Age group : 8 +

Raja, a hefty and strong tiger from the Memphi hills, makes his first mistake when he starts devouring cattle from a nearby village. The villagers leave no stones unturned, but their efforts are in vain. Then, a circus master, who calls himself 'Captain', comes to the aid of the villagers and takes Raja away. Raja finds himself in desperate situations several times during circus training and one of them results in him killing his master, accidentally. Chaos reigns supreme when Raja flees to a school headmaster's office. Atlast a saintly figure comes and takes him away.
RK Narayan's love for animals is clearly seen in this book. The mixture of humour, horror and thrill makes the book unputdownable. He proves himself yet again. subramanian
