Aching for the modern body: Chinese women's consumption of cosmetic surgery

| This dissertation seeks to explore the meanings and ideologies that underlie Chinese women's decisions to go through surgery that alters their bodies. Specifically, this study attempts to address three issues: (1) how Chinese consumer culture, the cosmetic industry in particular, constructs the beauty ideals of contemporary Chinese women in the promotion of their products and services; (2) what motivates Chinese women to consume cosmetic surgery; and (3) what constitutes the cultural and ideological implications of Chinese women's consuming cosmetic surgery against the backdrop of China's ever-increasing interactions with global cultures. | |
