Aching for the modern body: Chinese women's consumption of cosmetic surgery

By Wei Lou and Wei Luo

This dissertation seeks to explore the meanings and ideologies that underlie Chinese women's decisions to go through surgery that alters their bodies. Specifically, this study attempts to address three issues: (1) how Chinese consumer culture, the cosmetic industry in particular, constructs the beauty ideals of contemporary Chinese women in the promotion of their products and services; (2) what motivates Chinese women to consume cosmetic surgery; and (3) what constitutes the cultural and ideological implications of Chinese women's consuming cosmetic surgery against the backdrop of China's ever-increasing interactions with global cultures.
